I also have an announcement, which many of you might have seen last week on Facebook. Next January, Kyle and I are flying out to Walt Disney World to run the half-marathon together and I'm really excited about it! I ran the half in 2005 and Kyle flew down to cheer me on. We were supposed to run it together a few days after we got married and we paid for it and everything, but we were both exhausted and really sick on the day of the event and we didn't even make it down to pick up our shirts and pins. I have much higher hopes for this year! Oh, and did I mention that the event falls on January 8th, 2011...the same day as our two year wedding anniversary! I can't think of a better way to celebrate!!!
What makes me even more excited is that Kyle and I our running as part of the Hometown Heroes team for The Huntsman Cancer Foundation, which supports the Huntsman Cancer Institute here in Salt Lake City. I ran the half-marathon in 2005 as part of the Hometown Heroes team because I think the foundation does amazing work and I strongly believe in their mission. In fact, supporting Huntsman has sort of become the family business. My mother has worked for HCI for over ten years, I worked for HCI in college, and Kyle and my sister work for them now. I could go into all the reasons why it's such an amazing place, but I'll just sum it up by saying that Kyle and I are very proud to be part of the Hometown Heroes team.
Our commitment means that we'll be volunteering in community events and representing HCI. We'll also be fundraising towards our event goal, which is $5,000 ($2,500 each), and so we'll be writing a lot of letters and soliciting donations from all over the place. You'll notice that there's now a button on the sidebar of this blog explaining our commitment and asking for donations. I hope nobody is offended because I'm asking for money! Believe me, I wouldn't ask if it wasn't for a truly amazing cause. If you'd like to donate, please do so because we'd really appreciate it!
Anyway, the third reason I'm excited about this whole thing (beyond the raising money to fight cancer and the mid-winter trip to WDW) is that I've been looking for something to get me up and off my butt for a long time. I have a long way to go before I'll be ready for the half-marathon, so I decided I needed a little fitness week action here on the blog to get me motivated. And what would fitness week be without a...
Giveaway

This giveaway is coming to us not from Esty, but from a local Utah company that sells this really funny (and amazing!) product. It's called a Jyze and it's this really fun little thing that ends up giving this incredible arm workout. When I first saw it, I laughed because it seemed like one of those ridiculous fitness products that are just scams in bright colors, but then I actually got one and...I am not kidding you...this thing gives me the best arm workout ever. Kyle and I own free weights and a chin up bar and I have all the medicine balls and elastic bands and whatever, but honestly, nothing compares to this random little toy-like product.
It's also almost totally silent, so Kyle and I keep it in the family room so we can do it while watching TV. Neither of us have the upper body strength to do it for very long, but we can pass it between each other and get a pretty good work out. I wish I could show you my killer toned arms, but I've been slacking off and not doing any working out at all. Just trust me, this thing works!
The winner of this week's giveaway will win a Jyze Arm Workout Kit from the nice people at JyzeFit. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post with your favorite fitness activity. I'll announce the winner on Saturday! Remember, if you don't play, you can't win. Good luck!
UPDATE: We have a winner!

Oooh I've been looking for something to tone arms! My favorite fitness activity would have to be swimming or anything cardio.
My flabby arms are what is keeping me out of a strapless wedding dress! Ugh!
However, I love to walk and swim. :)
I like to run, or walk around walt disney world to keep in shape haha
I like spinning and dance classes.
That's awesome! I did the Disneyland 5K last September and have hopes of doing the coast to coast challenge in the future. Good luck with the race!
I'm so excited about Health and Fitness week! I'm always looking for ways to get/stay in shape. And, I've been meaning to say congrats and good luck with the half next year! The 2009 Innaugural Disney Princess Half was my first long distance race and I LOVED it! We've enjoyed the Expedition Everest Challenge and hope to take part on one of the F&W Festival races this year too. Disney races are truly the best - so training for those is my favorite fitness activity!
(Oh, and I already purchased the book you mentioned in the video update - I can't wait to learn more about healthy options, running routes at WDW, etc). Thanks for spotlighting this topic, Carly!
Congrats and good luck on running the WDW Half! Jeff and I ran it last year and it was freeeeeeezing! I hope the weather is much better for you and the group.
My current favorite fitness activity is called Piloxing. It's a combination of pilates and boxing. I've had the DVD for a year now and I never get bored of it.
Love fitness! My favorite activity is bootcamp. I need someone to tell me what to do. And the other people in the class keep each other motivated. it's fun and a great body workout. Yay for fitness week!
I love to bike with my fiance! I walk every morning and when I need something new to do I play on my wii fit!
I like to walk/run around my neighborhood while listening to Disney Podcasts. ^_^
My favorite is playing racquetball. DH and I used to play 3 nights a week. But we haven't found a court near where we live now :-/
I love running. My future hubby and I have run several disney races and we love them! I also love bootcamp and spinning, anything that helps me keep motivated.
my favorite is probably dancing. I can't believe how sweaty you get in an hour of dance class! After that, rowing. The best part of that one is there's always an open machine, hehe.
I'm also looking forward to this week. When I was working out for my wedding, I found SparkPeople to be very encouraging, and I'm looking forward to hearing about your picks.
I really love pilates...but I don't have the time/money for classes these days.
So I turn up the music and clean around the house once a week. I also love to use livestrong.com to keep up with daily walks/runs & what I eat (thedailyplate.com).
EXCITED ABOUT THIS WEEK! I've fallen off the wedding health wagon!
Good luck in the half! I did the full this year and broke my foot!! And now my fitness goals for the wedding are not really happening, not that I had much, just a little toning up. I'm hoping to start another round of p90x this summer.
Awesome feature! My definite fave fitness thing is to run; it lets out stress and you feel so good afterward. =)
Totaly loving this! it looks like great and fun work out!
I love to bike and I just joined a gym!
We have been getting in shape with P90X. We do a different workout every day with the program. It's so much easier to work out when you have a partner to be competitive with!
so happy you guys decided to do it! I love to run and dance :)

I chanced upon your blog a few days ago and actually spent an entire sat just looking at the photos and reading the stories... (Instead of studying for finals.. oops!)I now have a long list of things I wanna do when I get engaged/married. Haha.
Anyway, my fave activity would be cycling or swimming :)
As a woman in the process of ovarian cancer testing - I salute your marathon cause of choice! :) Way to go! I've committed to doing Disneyland's 1/2 marathon this year, despite whatever comes from this diagnosing process. Either way - the right ovary is coming out. It's just what's on it that may lead to chemo, etc. I decided that sometimes you just gotta look forward rather than live in limbo!
Maybe next year I'll be up for the full Marathon!
I love doing Triathlons! Swimming and biking are my favorite events. Hiking is really great too. Just about anything outdoors...
Oh yeah - and P90X work outs are AMAZING! And so fun!
i'm loving the couch to 5k app that lets me make my own playlists and then posts on twitter that i did it! and a bunch of us are doing the 100 push up challenge. i like the kind of mini-goal aspect of these kinds of things that keeps it really basic!
I enjoy walking my three dogs. It is a workout in and of itself and always challenging, lol :)
That sounds like a great sneaky way to get in some toning when you wouldn't really expect to (ie. doing while watching tv). My favorite fitness activity lately is bike riding, and walking with the hubs and pup.
This looks great for toning! My favorite fitness activity is spinning, when I can get to the gym. If not, I like all of my Jillian Michaels DVDs.
Good luck in the half next year! My fiance just got into running. I mostly go cycling and really enjoy practicing yoga most days of the week.
The trouble spot is my arms and of course I got a strapless dress for my wedding next June in EPCOT (hopefully!) So I purchased the Shake Weight last month and let me tell you it actually works! I understand its a bit suggestive and looks silly but I'm sticking with it.
Excellent topic for this week as I have made June 1st the first day of my "operation dumbo drop" ;)
Also, congrats on committing to running the marathon! I'm so excited for you both and will be rooting you on from over here!
My favorite "workout" is the long walks I take with my FI. We walk ALL OVER L.A. on the weekend, just running our errands and end up pulling like 12 miles round trip or more sometimes. The time with each other, also gives us time to catch up with each other and wedding plan - double bonus!:)
I'm also like you...not a huge fan of working out. I completely agree with you and hating the whole sweating part. One thing I do (kinda) enjoy is the elliptical trainer. It is a great workout and fabulous for weight loss (it helped me before and hopefully it will help me again before my upcoming wedding in August).
I love the stairmaster at the gym. Though lately I'm not near my gym, so I've been resorting to Wii Fit (more fun, but less effective)
Ooh looks like an interesting fitness gizmo! Cool!
I'm mostly a runner. I try to do lots of intervals on the cardio machines to up the fat burning. But I love trying new fitness routines! Sign me up!
I love dancing! I take class at the Dance Co Lab in Burbank, CA and when we do a combo across the floor I like to pretend I'm dancing on Main Street, USA!
Hi Carly - you are just so in-tune with what is happening with my wedding planning. Just as I was working with Disney on flowers you did flower week and I actually used some of the photo's you had on the blog for inspiration and sent them off to Disney. Then low and behold you are now on to wedding health and fitness and after seeing the few pics of me in my dress at the store I and my fiance have started a heathly plan. We bought the Biggest Loser diet and exercise book - I can tell you that watching the show with a vodka a tonic in hand is so much better than getting off the couch and on the treadmill! We are giving it a go though! Even after only 4 days I do feel much more alert :) Good luck with your training!
I love to swim!
