Weekly Update - 4/30/10

Today, these are the five things that I know to be true:
  1. We're moving tomorrow!!!
  2. There was no way no how that I was getting an actual weekly update (with video and all) together this week.
  3. The fact that I couldn't quite pull it together doesn't make me a terrible blogger. In light of what's going on in my life offline, it might actually make me a better wife.
  4. My husband is the awesomest.
  5. This photo (courtesy of Alina M. Photography) pretty much sums up how I'm feeling today:

Have a good weekend, everybody! I'll be posting when I can, but no promises...although I will announce the giveaway winner tomorrow!

Disney Wedding Ears for Your Bachelorette Party

Wedding ears and tequila shots with the boys? Kids, don't try this at home.

My bachelorette party was seriously one of the best nights I've ever had. It was low key...just me and five of my friends, but it was completely perfect...fun, silly, warm fuzzies, and all that jazz. Even though most of my party was non-Disney themed, my friends were thoughtful enough to include my Mickey bridal ears, which was just enough pixie dust for that night. If you're either planning a bachelorette party for a bride or you're looking forward to your own, you might want to consider getting some sort of Disney wedding hat/headband/accessory to add a little something different to the night.

Games For Your Disney-Themed Bridal Shower

I'll admit it: I'm not a huge fan of party games at showers.

I like the decorations and the favors and the yummy food and all the chatting, but I really have a hard time with most shower games. I've had to do everything from making toilet paper wedding gowns to picking a plastic ring out of a "wedding cake" made out of bleached flower...with my teeth! Sure, those kinds of things can be fun, but when you're either among strangers or maybe just not comfortable playing games with the other guests, it can be a little awkward to be super hands-on with the activities.

That being said, I totally understand why shower activities are necessary. It gives the party a focus and builds relationships/memories/etc. Plus, it breaks the ice for those guests who don't know anyone else but the bride, so (for those reasons) I am still pro-party games...despite my initial panic when confronted with party games.

That being said, I don't think you should organize any games that might make your guests wish they had just sent a gift. So,here are my top Disney-themed I-wouldn't-mind-doing-this-even-in-the-most-awkward-of-bridal-showers shower games:

  • Pin trading. The hostess(es) get a bulk pin lot from eBay and give one or two to each guests as they arrive...perhaps on homemade ribbon lanyards? Guests are then encouraged to trade with one another and additional pins are awarded throughout the event for various games, etc. Good ice breaker and cute favor.
  • Who am I? Pin or tape the name of a different famous Disney character to the back of each guest. Each guest has to guess the name of their character by asking the others questions to which the answer must be 'Yes' or 'No'. For instance 'Am I female?' Extra points to your party theming if everyone ends up being a different Disney princess!
  • Name That Movie Buffet. Coordinate your buffet items to coincide with different Disney movies. For example, serve "rum punch" for Mary Poppins and "poisoned apple turnovers" for Snow White. Give guests a worksheet so they can guess which movie inspired each menu item and award prizes to the guests with the most correct answers.

Do you like this Mary Poppins bridal shower cake? I love the penguins, but the umbrella topper is kind of freaking me out. What do you think?

  • The locations used in the event
  • The names of any vendors who helped (coordinator, photographer, DJ, hair/makeup, brand of dress/tux, etc.)
  • About 5-20 photos from the event that are at least 600px wide (in order to share photos, I must know who I can credit them to so tell me if they were taken by you/friends/family or if they were taken by a professional photographer and who that might be.) NOTE: Don't just send me a link! You need to attach the actual photos you'd like me to share to the email.

Wonderland Themed Bridal Showers

One of the most popular themes for Disney bridal showers is "Alice in Wonderland". I think the fact that the movie has flowers, cookies, and a tea party pretty much makes it the perfect shower inspiration.

If you're thinking about doing a bridal shower inspired by Alice in Wonderland, remember that you don't have to go totally over-the-top. It would be fun to use life-size playing cards or a 15 foot tea table in your decoration, but if that doesn't fit your budget (or your party-planning schedule), don't worry about it. You can still pull off a great party with a cohesive theme just by adding in a few consistent details like these:

And the Theme for the Week is...Home Events!!!

Ok, it's official. My life is just plain interfering with all of this blogging, so if I'm a little M.I.A. for the next couple of weeks, I apologize in advance. We're in the middle of moving, so all of my blogging-tools-stuff is getting squashed into boxes and my Internet connection is getting ready to pop over to another abode. Hopefully this blog won't be a compete suckfest while all of this is going on, but if it is...well, just don't say I didn't warn you...

Anyway, as further proof that my head has been on my blog business these days, I accidentally double-booked a theme for this week. I forgot that when I put International Week in at the last second, the whole rest of my blogging schedule was going to be way off. So, when two people donated giveaways for the week, I had a choice: I could either do a double-themed week (with two things that didn't really go together) or I could put it up for a vote on Facebook.

I chose Facebook vote, which started out really great...until you guys tied the vote. Nice.

So, I actually flipped a coin. Not even kidding. Heads won, which means this week's theme is...

HOME EVENTS!!!

(Yay! Woohoo! Sweet! Allright!)

I gloss over home events like bridal showers, engagement parties, and the like because I really love the big Disney weddings. This is sort of unfair, though, because a lot of the home events I've seen are just as stylish as special as the wedding day events, so I thought we'd give them their due this week. And what would a themed week be without a...

Giveaway

This week's giveaway comes to us from Party Poms and it's one of those things that's so lovely, I can't even imagine it floating into my life. It's the type of lovely that's strictly reserved for bridal teas captured in glossy coffee table books.

Nai at Party Poms makes the loveliest, delicate, decorative poms and you can get them in an incredible range of colors. You can also get them either as individuals or as these lovely pom garlands. Oh, my heart be still!

Party Poms is giving away a 3 yard Party Pom Garland to one lucky winner this week! I suppose it's a party decoration, but I'd be keeping this baby up in my house year-round. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this blog and tell me what I absolutely must buy for our new house...anything from furniture to house plants to a certain kind of fabric softener. (Yes, the giveaway is completely self-serving this week. Deal with it.) Remember, if you don't play, you can't win!

Good luck, everybody!

Sorry for the lack of posts today, but a Saturday without action on The Disney Wedding Blog means I'm actually having a real live weekend. So, I'm sorry...but I'm kind of not a little bit too...

Anyway, we have a winner for this week's giveaway! I really loved all the tips that everyone left and I've actually tried to put some of them into action. I generated a random winner and got...

Claire said...

Have a clothes swapping party. This is fun, useful and good for the planet. Invite all your firends round and ask them to bring a bottle of wine or some snacks plus all their unwanted clothes. During the party everyone looks through the clothes and takes anything they want. Any left over clothes go to charity.

Yay! Congratulations, Claire! Shoot me an email or Facebook message to claim your prize. It's funny, but I've actually done the clothing swap thing a couple of times. I'll admit, I did it for budget reasons (and as an excuse to break out the wine) but I love that it's also environmentally friendly.

Thanks again to everyone who entered! The new giveaway is coming tomorrow...

In this week's video, I...
  • am weirdly (and accidentally) luminescent
  • show off the wedding of a Disney Channel star
  • try to get you to ignore the cat in the background
  • present a song from one of my favorite Canadians

For the Week

  • Next week's theme: you'll find out on Sunday!
  • Mini-update: many of you were worried about Charlotte and Mark, who missed their Disney wedding when they got stuck in the U.K. thanks to that volcanic explosion. You'll be happy to know that they were able to reschedule with Disney and all of their vendors, so they'll be getting married next month. Thanks for the pixie dust!

Other Blog Business

Not too much blog business this week because I've been busy with other stuff. I've been getting contacted by lots of people who want to partner up for giveaways, spotlights, or advertising opportunities, lately, and although I know many of you are getting a little frustrated because I don't get back to you, at least you should know that it's universal not-getting-back-to-you-ness because I'm not getting back to anyone.

We've had a lot going on lately and we'll be moving in the next couple of weeks, so all of my projects are on hold for the moment, including anything connected to this blog. Thanks for your patience!

Reader Question of the Week

"Do you have any suggestions for green wedding favors?"
  • Handcrafted soap
  • Local food product, such as organic honey or apple butter
  • Small, potted plants
  • "Seed bombs" or "seed paper" purchased on Etsy
  • Donation in the guest's name to a planet-friendly cause
Anyone else have ideas?

Disney Wedding Feature on Chip and Co.
Chip and Co., a popular Disney fan site, posted an article about Disney weddings this week and I was lucky enough to be interviewed for it! It's nice that so many of the Disney fan sites are really getting into the whole Disney wedding scene. I also want to thank everyone who has submitted articles from The Disney Wedding Blog to DisMarks.com, the social media Disney website. I really appreciate it!

Super Intelligent Woman in Wedding Gown Denied Entry to Disneyland Paris
A guest wearing a secondhand wedding dress was denied entrance to Disneyland Paris and has decided to throw a big fat fit about it. She apparently was trying to dress up like a princess with her daughter (who was an appropriate age for dress up and therefore granted access to the park in her gown). She was turned away at the gate and was only allowed entry to the park after she went back to her hotel room and changed into normal person clothing.

All Disney parks have a policy against people entering in that kind of big costume because they don't want small children to mistake people in those costumes for Disney characters, since that's a big kidnapping risk. It's too bad that this woman is so traumatized that she's talking to every media outlet that she can find about how Disney has ruined her life, but let that be a lesson to us all. Wearing an old wedding dress to a Disney park = you're really stupid.

Song of the Week
The song I showcased in the video this week is Raffi's "What a Wonderful World". You can find the full version of the song here on YouTube if you'd like to preview it.

Easy Green: The Paperless Wedding

It's up to you to decide if this idea works for you or not. I can tell you right now that if it does work for you, you're going to save yourself a little time, a little headache, and a WHOLE lot of money...as long as everything goes according to plan. Interested? Ok, try this on for size:

Have a (nearly) paperless wedding.

That's right, no invites, no programs, no thank you cards. All of this will be done electronically, which means you don't have to buy stamps or lick envelopes or worry about hiring the perfect calligrapher. Plus, you're helping to save trees and all that. Isn't that awesome?

To be honest, I couldn't have done this. Hand making our wedding invitations was an expensive pain-in-the-butt, but I really enjoyed having the tangible little pretty packages to send out into the world. I also have a lot of friends and family members who are less than cyber-friendly (which is a little humorous, given how I spend my days), so I was worried that if I made too much of the info Internet-only, I'd have people who didn't know what was going on.

If this is something you think you can do, consider this plan:
  1. Send out Save The Date postcards (preferably on recycled paper) with a short message indicating what your wedding date will be and that you're not going to have any more paper associated with the wedding. Direct your guests to a web address.
  2. Put all of the information they need on that web address so they have something when they get there. Going to a web page that says "Coming Soon!" all over it is really annoying.
  3. Keep that webpage up and make sure that your contact information (email and phone) is all over it so your guests can get a hold of you.
  4. Double check on non-computer-people before the event.
  5. Enjoy having saved lots of trees and money.

Here's a sample script for your Save-The-Date to get you started:

It's a nice day for a...Green Disney Wedding! It is our honor to invite you to experience and observe the amazing love we have for each other, the deep appreciation we have for you, the wonderful magic of the happiest place on Earth, and the profound respect we have for our natural environment and resources.

We believe in and understand our responsibility to minimize our impact on the earth, while providing an unforgettable experience for our friends, our family, and ourselves. Our intention is to minimize the "footprint" our wedding makes on the planet while embracing and enjoying the abundance in our lives.

We are thrilled to invite you to participate in sharing and gathering information about our event by engaging in a paperless process. Please visit our webpage and provide us with your email address so we can include you in this happy event. See you real soon!

Easy Green: DIY Seed Matchbook Favors

These little favors are so beautiful and uncommon! I love that you can customize them by altering the design of the matchbook. The instructions have a PDF download if you want your matchbooks to look just like the ones in the picture (and those are dang cute, m'dear!), but if you wanted to do something custom for your wedding, you could just use that PDF as a guide and make your own matchbooks.

Can you imagine how cute these would be with different flowers from Alice in Wonderland on them? Or maybe three different colors and three different seeds to represent Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather? The possibilities are endless!

Instructions and dowloads available here from Martha Stewart Weddings.

Choosing a Green Venue for Your Disney Wedding

Many of the event venues available for Disney weddings have gone at least a little green. They offer recycling, use planet-friendly lighting, and have made a commitment to encourage guests against wasting resources like water. However, you can go even more green on your wedding day if you plan your Disney wedding with these tips in mind:
  • Keep everything close together. If you don't have to rent transportation to get you and your guests from one point to another during your event, you're saving more of your wedding budget AND you're being nice to the environment by cutting down on carbon emissions from the vehicles you aren't using. Extra points if most of your guests stay within walking distance of your event.
  • Use an outdoor + daytime setting for your ceremony, such as Sea Breeze Pointe, and avoid the need for extra lighting. (Hey, every bit of energy counts, right?)
  • Go digital. No matter how you look at it, digital photography and videography is better for the environment from the film to the chemicals. Sure, those cameras need energy to charge their batteries, but it's still no comparison in the end.
  • Don't order too much food. Sure, you want to make sure that your guest are happy, but ordering way too much food just leads to waste. Your coordinator can help you judge a reasonable amount necessary for your event.
  • Avoid centerpieces that need lots of water, such as groupings of multiple water-filled vases on each table. All of that water goes down the drain at the end of the night, unless you were hoping your guests were using it as a refreshing beverage.
  • Remember that these tips also apply to any other wedding events, including welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, bridal teas, dessert parties, and after-event brunches.

Don't worry about going overboard, though, because these green-attempts won't turn out to be worth it:
  • Don't worry about the DJ. If you're avoiding getting a DJ because you want to save energy, you'd be surprised to know that most DJs are very energy efficient these days, with just a laptop and a couple of speakers. You'll spend just as much energy on an iPod set up and even more energy on the equipment needed for a live band. Even simple musicians, such as harpists or violinists are generally wired these days, so the energy saved by skipping a DJ in favor of one of them is pretty minimal. So, unless you're willing to forgo music altoghether (or bravely serenade your event yourself), you can get a DJ if you want one.
  • Don't ask for doggie bags at the wedding buffet. Yes, all that food is a bit of a waste, but A) they won't give you a doggie bag and B) you don't really want to be the bride carrying out the 30 lbs of cocktail meatballs, do you? Sneak a ziploc into the dessert party if you really can't stand the thought of those brownies being tossed, but keep doggie bag requests to sit-down restaurants only.
  • Don't refuse to serve alcohol because you don't want to worry about the bottles used to serve the beverages. Disney will recycle them and nobody is going to believe you if you tell them you had a dry wedding to save the environment. If you ever wanted to lose friends for a good cause, that's definitely a way to go.

Disney's Shades of Green Resort falls under the "unofficial location" category because Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons does not handle the wedding celebrations that are held at this resort. Weddings at Shades of Green are held by a specialized team that only handles events at this location.

Easy Green: DIY Paper and Fabric Flowers

This whole being green thing is a little tricky. I set out to find some cute instructions for making your own floral and found all sorts of things...but only about half of them fit the whole "eco-friendly wedding" idea. Lots of the projects involved buying fancy (non-recyclable) paper or other materials, which seemed to kind of defeat the purpose.

I finally pulled some projects together that are both planet-friendly and super cute, depending on the style of your wedding. Here, for your consideration, are my favorite DIY flower projects from around the web:

As I've said, I'm not great at being green. However, I am wonderful at shopping vintage and that whole reuse = recycle has to get me some greenie points, right?

Easy Green: DIY Centerpieces Using Recycled Glass Jars

from the Photojojo! blog

I am a major fan of photos and photo crafts, so I love these little glass-jars-turned-photo-frames. I'm picturing centerpieces using a combination of tea lights in up-turned glass jars and photos of the happy couple in down-turned glass jars. Most of the couples who get married on Disney property have lots of photos from trips to the parks or Disney trips taken with family when they were younger. How fun would it be to incorporate all of those memories into your special day?

For couples who don't have a ton of photos to share or aren't keen on seeing themselves that many times over on the reception tables, you could always use vintage Disney postcards, like the ones Kyle and I used for our RSVPs and then you could pop those into the jars. I think any sort of Disney-on-paper idea would work with these...

Easy Green: Visit The Green Bride Guide!

As much as I love to be the bearer of awesome things, sometimes I know when it's time to outsource. Like, for example, when I'm thinking about doing some posts on green weddings and I stumble across an adorable and completely comprehensive green wedding blog that pretty much says it all. Should I snag content from them or just tell you to step through the looking glass yourself and check it out?

Well, today I'll do both.

I encourage you to go visit The Green Bride Guide because they're doing some wonderful stuff over there AND I'm going to repost this great list of F.A.Q.s that I found on their site:

What is a "green" wedding?

A green wedding is any wedding where the couple tries to decrease the impact of their event on the planet - and there are many ways to do it! Every part of a wedding has eco-friendly options worth considering. Use the products section and green wedding directory on this site to explore hundreds of green alternatives for invitations, flowers, photography and more!

What are the benefits of having a green wedding?

There are many benefits to having a green wedding, but here are three.

(1) The environmental benefits. With 2.5 million wedding a year in the United States the impact is enormous. The average wedding produces 63 tons of CO2 and 400-600 pounds of trash. Anything we can do to decrease the impact of these events makes a difference.

(2) The social benefits. The average wedding costs almost $40,000 and weddings are a $60+ billion industry. When you start talking to vendors about green choices, and explain your choices to your guests, you support the green economy and change the way people in your community think. Your wedding is an opportunity to showcase how easy it is to be eco-chic and to share your favorite eco-friendly products with your guests.

(3) The economic benefits. Being green usually saves you money - which in today's economy is probably reason enough to do it! By making simple substitutions and eco-conscious decisions, like choosing a location central to the majority of your guests, it is easy to decrease your impact on the planet and the cost of your event simultaneously.

Are conventional weddings really that bad for the environment?

There are 2.5 million weddings a year in the United States, with an average of more than 150 guests each. When you add up all of the stuff that goes into weddings (single-use bleached white dresses, chemically treated imported flowers, toxic makeup and skin care products, mined gem-based jewelry, individual packets of rice, etc.) you see that the environmental impact from these events is enormous.

For example, if every wedding this year used a disposable aisle runner and they were laid end to end, they would circle the globe twice! Similarly, the amount of paper used to make invitations could cover the island of Manhattan. The bottom line is that every green choice makes a difference - no matter how small.

Are green weddings more expensive?

No! This is a myth we are working hard to dispel. By buying local seasonal flowers, using recycled elements, and incorporating things you and your friends already own into your decor you can save you up to 40% of your wedding! For more information see "Save $11,000+ on Your Wedding by Going Green."

Does planning a green wedding take more work?

No! You have to make all of the decisions anyway. You have to choose invitations, and napkins, and what you will wear, and so all that it takes to plan a green wedding when you boil it down is keeping the environmental impact of those choices in mind as you decide. In some ways it can be easier to plan a green wedding, because it can limit the realm of choices to a more manageable number. For example, there are probably 1,000,000 invitation designs, and only 10,000 eco-friendly invitation options. As ten thousand is more than most couples want to look through anyway, it can make the task easier. Plus - with the Green Bride Guide and the Green Wedding Directory, everything you need is in one convenient location!

With so many companies claiming to be green, how can I avoid greenwashing?

This is a significant problem and not an easy one to solve. Because "green" is not a regulated term, companies can use it freely, without making significant changes to their products or business practices. The Green Bride Guide Online screens all of the products and services in our database and provides a vendor leaf rating to help you find the most reliable options. We also encourage couples to seek out certified eco-friendly products (e.g. organic, fair trade, etc.) whenever possible.

How do we know which green products are "best"?

There are many shades of green and it is often hard to decide which choice is "best." For example, when you buy organic produce from Chile, you decrease the amount of pesticides and fertilizers used on the earth and increase the demand for sustainably produced food. That's good. But when you buy locally grown conventional produce, it has a smaller carbon footprint, which effects global warming. So that is also good. Experts debate back and forth about which option is better and it is easy to feel overwhelmed and disheartened by the question of which option is the "greenest." Instead, try to find the choices that are right for you, without worrying too much about what is "best." The fact that you are thinking about it at all is what maters in the long run.

What do we do if we can't find green vendors in our area?

It is easier to "go green" in some parts of the country than others, and if you live outside a major metropolitan area, it may be almost impossible to find green vendors. In the back of The Green Bride Guide you can find worksheets to help you talk to florists, caterers and other service providers in your community about simple changes they can make to help you green your wedding. For example, even if you don't have an organic baker in town, you can ask your baker to substitute in organic flour, organic milk and cage-free eggs (all available at stores like Wal-Mart) and have a greener cake. When you start talking to vendors about what you want to do, and explain your choices to your guests, you change the way people in your community think about what it means to be green. You make being green seem possible and help get the word out about sustainable alternatives. Sometimes being green takes creativity and a willingness to be flexible. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want upfront. Remember, if they say no you are no worse off than you were before.

Will our friends and family understand?

People today are more aware of our impact on the environment than they were even a few years ago. Although you may get a few odd looks, most friends and family members will support your decision go green. To skeptics, you can explain that you want to make your wedding day sustainable, because marriage is about confirming your commitment to a long-term future together. Stepping back and thinking about your actions in the greater context is part of that process.

How do we avoid seeming preachy?

Although it is up to the two of you, it is nice to let your guests know about your green choices. In addition to being better for the environment, having a green wedding is an opportunity to show friends and family members that you don't have to sacrifice style or comfort to go green. However, many eco-friendly options look just like their conventional counterparts, so guests won't know they are green unless you tell them. We suggest including a small blurb on the back of your program, on your website or on the inside of your seating cards explaining what you have done and why. Letting guests know about your choices can also help you realize them. For example, if they know recycling is important to you they will be more likely to separate out their trash and won't throw away your compostable plates.

Are you being hypocritical if only a few parts of your wedding are green?

No! If you can't find something, or you don't want to choose the green option at every turn, that is OKAY. It is called "going green" for a reason - it is a process. Start with just one thing and go from there. The more eco-friendly elements you can include the better, but if you have your heart set on a certain dress, or can't convince your caterer to compost, don't feel too bad about it. If every couple made just one green choice - that would be 2.5 million green choices a year! Do what you can, and know it makes a difference.

Send Pixie Dust to UK Brides Stranded by the Volcano

It's a little strange that the first post of green wedding week is a post about a natural disaster that's causing trouble for Disney brides in Europe.

Charlotte and Mark are supposed to be getting married in Walt Disney World in just a couple of days, but they've been stranded in the United Kingdom due to the volcanic explosion in Iceland. By the end of the day on Sunday, a total of 63,000 flights had been canceled in the four days since ash from a volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland closed the airspace of a large swath of Europe, according to air traffic authority Eurocontrol. Charlotte had originally been told that her party would be on a flight leaving today, but it's been postponed as well and things aren't looking like they'll get over in time for their wedding.

My heart goes out to them and everyone else who's been stranded by the volcano. Please send pixie dust to get them on their way!

It's Easy Being Green! Welcome to Green Wedding Week!!!

In honor of Earth Day, this week's theme is green weddings. You know, eco-friendly and easy on the planet and all that.

I'm either the best or worst person to blog about this topic this week because I'm not actually that planet-friendly myself. I do try, but I admit that I take long showers and Kyle and I never owned a recycling bin and I drive an old SUV that's probably killing the atmosphere, etc. Despite my eco-shortcomings, I thought that green weddings deserve a full week of attention and, if anything, I'll learn stuff in the process and hopefully come out the other side as a better, greener person.

That being said, my lack of green-ness may make this week a little more user friendly for people who aren't "supah green". (Name that movie!) I don't read too many blogs about being green, even though I read a bazillion blogs, because I'm often both confused and a little put off by some of the posts. I want to be kinder to the planet, but I don't want to use old milk jugs on my porch to heat water via the sun so I can pour it into the large basin above my outdoor shower and bathe while collecting that water to use for laundry and housecleaning. I just don't.

Likewise, I didn't want to hurt the environment when planning my wedding, but some of the eco-friendly ideas I came across were just...well...I don't know. Like not using electricity during the wedding, which would have totally changed the effectiveness of the DJ, or only doing e-mail wedding invitations so that we weren't using expensive, non-recyclable paper. I can see why our wedding invitations were wasteful...but I really, really, really, really loved them. Le sigh.

So, I'm hoping to bring posts that help our planet, but don't totally change the style of the wedding you're planning. Per requests from my Facebook friends, this week will be DIY and How-To heavy, with a few special wedding spotlights mixed in. At the moment, I don't have a super green Disney wedding to share with you, because I haven't seen one, so if you know of one, be sure to pass it along.

The one thing that I'm pretty green about is shopping. I love to buy recycled (or rather "upcycled") products that are made out of vintage goods, especially when it comes to creative things that people have done with old Disney products. So, I was very excited when Etsy seller thishandmadelife agreed to donate one of her journals for this week's giveaway. She makes the cutest journals out of old books and since I'm both a major journal user and a huge fan of children's books, I'm pretty much her target audience. And now I get to share the goodness with you!

Giveaway
Etsy seller thishandmadelife is giving away a journal of your choice from her Etsy shop. I will warn you that if you see one now that you really want, I'd pick it up before the giveaway is over, just in case it sells before you win the free journal. That's the special thing about these products...because they're made out of vintage goods, they're pretty much unique. So, it's better to grab them when you can!

To enter the giveaway, leave a post on this comment with a tip that will help me (and my husband) be a little more green in the future. It can be anything...we probably could use tips for our whole entire life. I only ask that it isn't something crazy. (Crazy = milk jug shower thing) Remember, if you don't play, you don't win! I'll announce the winner next Saturday. Good luck to everyone!!!

Earn Money For Your Wedding

If you've read me for a really long time, you'll remember when I used to talk about earning money online doing Sunshine Rewards surveys. When I was planning my wedding, we needed every penny we could get our hands on, so I used to do online surveys when we were watching TV or when I was up late on the computer. You earn money for each one you do and then you can cash it out for lots of things, including Amazon gift cards or Disney dollars. We ended up earning about 80 Disney dollars that way...which wasn't a whole lot, but if you think of it in terms of wedding stuff, it covered my shoes, earrings, lipstick, etc.

I think that a location inside the Magic Kingdom on the the side of Cinderella's Castle, near the Wishing Well. That way Disney brides can truely feel like a princess without the hefty price tag that the actual Castle would have. ;)

Congratulations to our winner! Be sure to email me at thatdisneygirl at gmail dot com to claim your prize.

I'll announce the new giveaway tomorrow!

Reminder: Stay Out of Florida Lakes!!!

I've been seeing a trend, lately, of wedding parties, disneymooners, or trash-the-dress sessions doing things that involve getting into the lakes on Walt Disney World property. Many of these lakes have signs that warn against swimming in the lake, but I feel like many vacationers believe that the warnings are just for gators and other sharp-toothed critters, so dipping in the occasional toe or taking a quick swim is no big deal. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

In this week's video, I...
  • talk about international week
  • explain why we didn't head off to an international park for our honeymoon
  • apologize for not fitting in all the clips/links that people sent me for this week
  • share a song that I would be pretty surprised if someone actually used in their wedding

For the Week

  • This week's giveaway is for some lovely Japanese-inspired products from Etsy seller GamiWorks.
  • Coming next week: Green weddings, Disney style

Other Blog Business

So, I posted about a million times last week. I know some people like getting a lot of different types of posts all day, but I sort of felt like all my posts suffered because I was trying to get too many up at once. I think I might slow down a little bit again. If I try to share everything that I could possibly share with you, it's going to be pretty overwhelming and I don't want to lose readers who feel like I'm just pouring stuff on them.

In other news, I lost a reader! This is going to sound lame, but it's the first time since I started this blog more than two years ago that my reader count has gone down instead of up. Yes, it only went down by one, but still...I suppose it's dumb that I even noticed, because I'm beyond the point where you're supposed to care about every individual visitor, but I even started thinking of people, like "So and so hasn't commented in a while...I wonder if they're the one that left..." To hightlight how ridiculous this whole Carly conversation is, the site had almost 6,000 individual visitors this week...and I'm pouting about the one subscriber that left.

Reader Question of the Week

"I'm in the U.K. and my boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married at WDW. There's a travel agency here that offers Disney wedding packages that are cheaper than the quotes I got from Disney. Should I go with one of those instead?"

This is a tricky question that mainly U.K. brides have to deal with. Companies in the U.K., like jetsave.com, offer Florida wedding packages with Disney weddings included at prices that are lower than DFTW prices, especially when you factor in the cost of travel and your resort stay. The package description from jetsave.com says:

Have you ever thought about getting married in Florida?

Well Jetsave can make your dreams come true. We offer a variety of weddings in and around the Orlando area to suit all tastes and budgets. Our venues include church weddings, garden weddings and lots more.

You will have a dedicated British Wedding co-ordinator based in Florida who will help you plan your special day. Once you arrive in Florida we arrange to meet you at your accommodation and finalise the details. We will give you the forms necessary to obtain your marriage license. We will help you every step of the way, leaving you all to relax and enjoy the Florida sunshine for your big day.

...

We can tailor your special day to your requirements or you can simply take one of Confetti, Crystal or Pearl packages at the venues mentioned above (prices do not include flights or holiday accommodation and may vary depending on wedding location).

Confetti Package from £449
Includes Minister, venue and coordinator services. All Administration

Crystal Package from £652
Includes Officiant, venue, coordinator services, hand tied bridal flowers and grooms buttonhole, 40 - 4 x 6 size photos, album and CD of images. All Administration of wedding.

Pearl Package from £992
Includes Officiant, venue, coordinator services, hand tied bridal flowers and grooms buttonhole, 40 - 5 x 7 size photo with a choice of album, CD of images, 4 hour limo hire. All administration of wedding.
Parties between 25-35 add £7 per person
Parties over 35 add £79 for a second coordinator

What can be more special and romantic than a Disney Fairytale wedding?
Only Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida can offer such a romantic location for a Disney wedding. You can enjoy a memorable ceremony in some of the most scenic locations, plus a romantic stay at a selected alt Disney World® Resort Hotel. Please call our weddings on 0871 231 2295 (Calls cost 10p per minute plus network extras) to book your perfect day. All weddings are performed Monday - Thursday and times vary according to location.

You might ask, how is this possible? Well, the locations that this company uses for their "Disney weddings" aren't actually locations that DFTW uses. Only DFTW can hold "official" Disney weddings, such as the majority of weddings that are featured on this site. However, you can book a wedding at the Swan and Dolphin, who doesn't use DFTW for their wedding services, or you can hold your event at Leu Gardens or the Wyndham Orlando Resort, which are not on Disney property, but are close to the theme parks.

So, if you would just like to get married near WDW or you're interested in having your wedding at the Swan and Dolphin, which is on Disney property, you may want to consider booking a wedding package through one of these companies. However, it's important to remember that you won't be booking the services of DFTW, their amazing team, or any of the special Disney touches, such as the ability to have characters at your wedding, etc.

Sneak Preview of the 2010 Ad Campaign for Kirstie Kelly Bridal
Kirstie Kelly released four sneak peek photos of the new ad campaign this week. You can either see the photos on her Facebook page or on my Facebook page where I reposted it. Hers might be a better bet, though, since my Facebook wall moves pretty fast sometimes.

New Happily Ever After CD from Disney
Disney released a new CD this week called "Happily Ever After" and it features a collection of romantic Disney music. I love their Fairy Tale Wedding CD, but I was a little lukewarm on this one...mainly because I already had a lot of this music from other Disney compilations. My advice to you is to check out the songs on iTunes before you buy the full CD, especially if you're just looking for one or two songs to add to your collection (like we did). Personal favorite: Beautiful ~ Jim Brickman and Wayne Brady. (I have a Chappelle show crush on Wayne Brady.)

Song of the Week
The song I showcased in the video this week is Isabelle Aubret's "Un Chant", which is a French version of "One Song" from Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. You can find the full version of the song here on YouTube if you'd like to preview it.

How to Get Married at Disneyland Paris

This was literally the only Disneyland Paris wedding photo I could find
and I can't even tell you what hotel this reception was held at. Le sigh.

Warning: Getting married at Disneyland Paris is a real pain if you're not French.

I was having a hard time getting information, so I called France and talked to a lovely woman who was super patient with my American-ness. Here's the scoop:

Disneyland Paris has no official wedding packages, like the other Disney parks do. However, you can have your wedding celebration in one of their hotels, much like you would at any hotel. You have to arrange outside vendors like musicians, officiants, photographers, etc., but they are available to help you and can recommend people if you're totally clueless.

BUT...in order to have your wedding at Disneyland Paris, you have to meet France's marriage requirements, including
  • Two documents that prove that you've been living in France for 40 days. A hotel receipt for 40 days is not enough, because you're still classified as a traveler. You must have things like electric bills and other utility statements or proof of renter's/home owner's insurance.
  • a valid passport or a French residence permit
  • a birth certificate that is less than three months old. If your birth certificate is not in French, you need to present it with a certified translation from a sworn translator. Marne-la-Vallee (where Disneyland Paris is) has a sworn translator at the city offices.
  • affidavit of marital status (Apparently this is intended to just say that you aren't already married, but you actually have to say that you've never had premarital sex. You should have heard the lengthy silence after the French woman told me this. I think there were crickets.)
  • affidavit of law (something French that means you're allowed to get married)
  • a medical certificate no more than two months old that says you're fit to get married
  • You must post a marriage banns no more than 10 days prior to the wedding date. I had a hard time with the translation here, since it sounds like something that would prevent you from getting married. Apparently it's just an announcement of your intent to marry.

All of this is presented at the town hall in Marne-la-Vallee before the wedding and you're actually married there at the city offices so that it's all official. Then they give you something that you can present to your officiant at the wedding and the ceremony that follows is the religious/ceremonial type ceremony. You still need to make sure that your officiant is allowed to marry you, but that's a lot like the restrictions they have here in the states. You cannot get a temporary certification, however, for a friend or family member to marry you.

Lesson learned? It's a pain to get married at Disneyland Paris unless you're French. I suggested that you could just rent an apartment for 40 days from abroad and present those bills when you get to France, but the woman I talked to said that they're very strict about that kind of thing and she didn't think it would work. I asked her if this is the reason that they don't have wedding packages or any online information and she told me that they just don't get many inquiries, even from citizens of France. Apparently the idea of a Disney wedding is very silly. Who knew?

My advice to you: if your heart is set on a wedding/reception at Disneyland Paris, but you aren't able to move to France for a month and a half, then you need to elope in America and have a fake wedding/reception when you get there. The woman on the phone said that they have no problem with fake marriages as long as you can provide proof that you are legally married in another country. Then you can have whoever you want perform the ceremony and you don't have to deal with all the paperwork.

Is it as cool as being able to say that you tied the knot (officially) in France? No, probably not...but I couldn't find anyone from the U.S. who's been willing to move to France to get married there. So, I suppose that's about as good as it gets.

If I ever get invited to a wedding at Tokyo Disney, I'm totally going to dress the part. I feel like the entire country of Japan is an excuse to wear all of the lovely things that I tell myself are just a little too silly for my dull American life...
