Wedding Spotlight: Andrea + Ross

Well, how's this for a happy update? After I posted the wedding photos from today's previous post, Vicki Arndt from David and Vicki Arndt Photography let me know that they had actually handled the "real" photography for the wedding, working as Disney Photographic Services photographers. The shots taken by the other photographers (which were the only shots I had seen) were actually taken for the benefit of David Tutera, with the idea that they would be used as promotional photos. When you think of them that way and then take a second look, you can totally see why those photos were chosen!

Of course, this blows my whole shpeal about details and personality and all of that out of the water, because the Arndt photos are full of life and tell me a lot about the couple, but that's ok. I'll try to get back on topic tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy this second look at Andrea and Ross's couture wedding:

When are Wedding Details Just Too Much?

Ok, I have to put a little note right here in the beginning: the wedding that I'm about to discuss is absolutely beautiful. I'm not even sure that's an opinion...that might just be a indisputable fact. So I don't want you, dear readers, to leave thinking that I didn't like this wedding. That is not the issue. It's just a good example of something that I think brides should consider before their wedding day.

Wedding Spotlight: Shena + Ryan

We're starting off our week about "making it personal" with this beautiful, classic Disney wedding. Shena and Ryan used two of the most popular Disney wedding venues: the Wedding Pavilion and the Grand Floridian resort. We've seen tons of weddings at these two locations on this site (including the wedding of yours truly), but Shena and Ryan added special touches to their day to make it very "them", from the bride's blue shoes to the trim on the bridesmaid wraps to the themed groom's cake.

It's interesting...Shena and Ryan did a lot of the things that Kyle and I did. They used our venues, had their wedding party wear black with white flowers, and did their group portraits on the beach as well. Yet, in my opinion, our weddings ended up looking very different...which just goes to show that your wedding never has to be cookie cutter, regardless of where you have it!

This Week's Theme: Making It Personal

This week we're going to look at little things that couples have done to make their wedding day their own. With all of the Disney weddings going on, it would be easy to have a wedding day that looked exactly like someone else's wedding day. It doesn't take much effort to add a few touches that will make your day perfect for the two of you and create memories that will be even more meaningful.

And, what would a new theme be without a...

We Have a Winner!

Sorry for the delay...I usually post the giveaway winners on Saturday, but yesterday got away from me. I could go into details about my excuse, but instead I'll just say: PREGNANT! (That's going to be my excuse for everything in the upcoming months. Don't be surprised if weeks of silence are followed by a post that just says PREGNANT!)

Anyway, we do have a winner for last weeks ridiculously cute giveaway from Etsy seller SweetPixiePie and the winner is...

Weekly Update - 8/27/10

No video for the week, folks. I do not so much have the pregnancy glow. In fact, one of the top three responses to "I'm pregnant" has been, "oh...I wondered because you've looked awful for weeks." That's just how I roll.

Updates

This has been a fun week, even though I didn't post all of the weddings that I thought I was going to. I think capping myself at one-two posts per day is good for my energy level right now, so I'm going to plan the next couple of weeks with that in mind. This does, of course, mean that I'll be getting through those spotlights slower, so if you're waiting on one you might be waiting for a little bit. If you're getting really anxious, shoot me an email and I might be able to tell you when it's coming up.

Quick note about spotlights: even if you've applied to be spotlighted, you may need to apply again. I had way too many applications piling up and a lot of them weren't ready to be spotlights, so I did a lot of thinning this week. If you applied before you had your wedding (and therefore had no photos to share), I deleted your application. If you applied and gave me a link that needed a password, but didn't give me the password, it got deleted. If you applied and said you'd send me your photos if I really wanted to see them, it got deleted. There were just too many for me to be able to touch base with everyone and I have a ton that are ready to go, so I had to make room. If yours was deleted, don't get discouraged! If you'd like to be spotlighted, go ahead and apply again. Just make sure I can get to the photos easily and that you tell me who the photographer is. Thanks!

In other news, I did book a mini-trip to Walt Disney World in October so I'll be in Orlando if you'll be in Orlando. I'll only be there from the 6th thru the 9th (very mini trip) and my days are filling up fast, but I'm hoping to save some free time for a quick meet up. We just can't have too much fun, though, because I promised Kyle I wouldn't go to WDW and have too much fun without him. My mantra for this trip is "This is not a vacation. This is not a vacation," because I'm supposed to be focusing on getting stuff done for the blog. We'll see how well I stick to that game plan!

The March trip with the big exciting stuff has officially been canceled. I got a couple of confused emails from people that I'd made tentative plans with before we knew that I'll be having a baby that month. Baby = no Florida. I am still trying to organize a big blog meet for January, because I'll be there on my anniversary trip, but I don't have hard plans to share yet.

I appreciate everyone who took that survey I put up! Unfortunately, there was an even split on just about every question, with the exception being that you all wanted free food. I did get some great write-in suggestions, though, and I'm going to look into options while I'm there in October, so hopefully I'll have more to share soon. Also, I'm just starting to look for sponsors for the January meet. If you know someone who is interested in being a sponsor, please have them drop me an email.

Photo of the Week

I know many of you saw this photo on DFTW's fan page or on my Facebook page this week, but I just had to share it in the weekly update because it fits this week's theme so well! Talk about unexpected! We'll be seeing more of Christina + Rich's wedding very soon on this blog...

Coming Next Week
  • A new giveaway
  • A new theme
  • An exciting announcement about next year's Disney Wedding Awards

A Special Request

I have a community week scheduled this fall and I would really like to encourage you guys to get involved! If you have a special friend (or group of friends) that you've made through the Disney wedding forums or if a special wedding was particularly inspirational to you, I'd love to hear about it. Send me a photo and a short paragraph on why that photo inspires you/makes you happy/sums up Disney weddings and be sure to tell me your name (or username) and the name/username of the bride you're talking about.

For example:

"I love this picture of Dara and her wedding party because everyone looks so happy and relaxed! Whenever I got stressed with wedding planning, this photo came to mind and I hoped that by the time our big day rolled around, we would be having as much fun with our friends as these ladies are having. It's just such a joyful picture!" ~ Carly (thatdisneygirl)

If you'd like to submit some thoughts about a special photo or friendship that you've made, please drop me an email at carly@disneyweddingblog.com. You don't have to send a photo, but in all fairness I'll probably be a bit more likely to use entries with photos since we looooove photos on this site!

As part of community week, I'm also looking for guest posts, including articles about what you learned, letters to your spouse/fiance, and inspiration boards. Thanks!

This post has two layers of the unexpected. The first is that I've never seen anything like this before, or at least never done so well. The second is that this photo session was a surprise gift from Misty Miotto to her great aunt-and great-uncle's 55th wedding anniversary and a lovely gift it is. I've only shared a handful of these images with you here, but you can enjoy more if you check out this slideshow.

Disney Weddings: Expectations vs. Reality

One of the challenges that many Disney couples face is that other people make quick assumptions about their big day when they hear that they will be having a Disney wedding. Sometimes, those assumptions can be negative and may come out as criticism or teasing, which can be frustrating for couples as they plan their wedding.

However, it's important to remember that many people may simply be making an honest mistake when they assume that you'll be walking down the aisle with Mickey Mouse himself. If you're having a Disney wedding (and, for that matter, reading this blog), it's likely that you've seen dozens, if not hundreds, of real Disney weddings and you're familiar with the different options and common choices made by real Disney couples. Your friends, family, and guests probably won't have the same kind of exposure and may be struggling to imagine what your big day will bring.

Characters in Flight Weddings at Downtown Disney

This is an unexpected and very affordable alternative to traditional Disney weddings.

Characters in Flight is the name of that giant hot air balloon at Downtown Disney. For less than $20, you can pay to take a quick trip up into the sky for a look at most of the Walt Disney World area. The balloon is decorated with Disney characters, but it's actually operated by a company called AƩrophile, so (like the Swan and Dolphin) the balloon is open for events not coordinated by Disney. You know, like weddings.

I love beach weddings and I love Alice-in-Wonderland themed weddings, but I've never seen a wedding that combined both of those elements. This Disney-themed wedding took place on a beautiful beach in Malaysia, but the couple integrated tons of handmade Wonderland touches into their day and gave it that little extra pixie dust. I love that they took a concept that already had a ton of style built in (beach wedding) and went the extra mile to make it their own.

Welcome to the Week of the Unexpected

I know, "The Week of the Unexpected" is about the strangest week title I've ever come up with. I just didn't know how else to phrase this week's theme, which is all about "different" Disney weddings...but in a good way! I feel like when you say that someone's wedding was "different", sometimes you're just nicely trying to sidestep the fact that their wedding was a tacky disaster.

So, I think "unexpected" fits the weddings of this week much better, since these weddings are lovely, tasteful, memorable...and they just happen to have a few things about them that make you go, "Huh...I've never seen that before!" Yes, it's an odd theme, but I feel like the weddings on this blog are starting to blend together just a little bit and I'm seizing this week as an opportunity to shake things up! And, of course, what would a new week be without a...

Giveaway

This week's giveaway comes to us from Etsy seller SweetPixiePie, whose custom sculptures are just plain delightful. What I love about the cake toppers that she creates is that you can say, "I'd like a wedding cake topper that's Disney themed...probably something to do with Mickey and Minnie...with maybe a few birds or something" and she'll deliver just that BUT she'll do it in a completely unexpected way. A New Week and a New Giveaway!!

Ok, we've taken a HUGE break from giveaways and I have no excuse for it, other than that it's summer and my computer time is being spent outside on the porch with cold pickles and lemonade.

I'm finally getting my act together a bit, so things should be getting back to normal. I'm trying to adopt a "back to school" approach to all of my online stuff, so hopefully I'll be getting more crucial bits of info up on the blog. It's embarrassing that I still have so many unfinished options on the menu! That's a biggie on my to-do list.

As it is, I wasn't ambitious enough to pick a theme for this week, so it will be more spotlights and randomness...BUT I did get it together enough to round up a...

Giveaway

Yay for a new giveaway! This one's a cute one, too, and perfect for weddings, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, anniversaries, etc. It comes to us from The Tely Shop on Etsy and it fits perfectly in my little list of "2010 Party Must-Haves". Of course, I'm talking about cupcakes and all of the fun little accessories that cupcakes have these days.

Disney Wedding Roundup

I'm sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I am just wiped out these days. I'm hoping to have a more productive week this week, but in the meantime I thought I'd do a little roundup of past spotlights, just in case you missed any of the loveliness:
