How to Look Skinny, Happy, and Fashionable in Your Photos

If you're getting married, you're probably going to get photographed. A lot.

Photos might be taken of your proposal. Your engagement party. Your bridal shower. Your bachelorette party. Your bridal tea. Your wedding rehearsal. You getting ready in the morning. You getting ready to walk down the aisle. You walking down the aisle. (You get the picture.)

Oh, and did I mention that those photos will be all over Facebook, Twitter, Google+, your photographer's blog, your mom's blog, and this blog right here (assuming you apply for a spotlight)? It's pretty overwhelming when you think about how many people will be seeing your picture. I mean, I don't know how many people read your mom's blog, but if you end up on this blog, at least a thousand people will be looking at your photo within 24 hours of me putting it up.

So, it wouldn't hurt to look your best! Here are some tips for looking skinny, happy, and fashionable for the paparazzi:

Skinny
  • Stand like a model. This takes just a bit of practice, but if you can nail this pose (and recreate it when people want their picture taken with the bride), you'll drop ten photographic pounds just like that. Cross one leg in front of the other, with the front foot pointing towards the camera and the back foot at an almost perpendicular angle. Have your head facing the camera, but turn your torso 45 degrees away and lean in slightly, dropping your chin a bit. I know it sounds complicated, but it's not that hard. If you can't remember what to do, open any celebrity gossip magazine anywhere. They all have it down pat.
  • Put your hands on your hips. A little bit of space makes your arms look thinner and your waist look more tucked in. My hands are on my hips in about 40% of our wedding photos.
  • If you're looking around for skinny outfits to wear to your showers or for your engagement photos, the classic is a fitted top, a wide belt, and an A-line skirt that goes to around your knees. Dark jeans paired with flowy tops also make you look skinny in photos, provided the top isn't too flowy. (Wearing clothes that are too big will just work against you.) Finally, skip patterns and wear solids, especially in dark colors. They photograph much better.
  • If you're being photographed while you're sitting down, be sure to sit as close to the camera as possible and lean in. Sitting away from the camera makes your thighs look bigger. (Blah!)
  • Use your fiance/friends/in-laws. If you're having your picture taken with someone else, turn towards them and lean into them. It will make you look thinner even if the person you're leaning into is a twig.

Carrie's 3-Part Series on DHS Events over on Studios Central

If you're interested in having an event at Disney's Hollywood Studios (wedding-related or otherwise), you should check out the 3-part series by Carrie Hayward on Studios Central covering private party venues inside the park. It's full of photos and quick information that really breaks down the options:

Side note - if you aren't familiar with the Studios Central website, you should really take some time to check it out. There's tons of information over there and it's organized really well. It's run by Matt Hochberg, who you've probably heard on the WDW Today podcast. This site was one of the ones that I recommended to friends/family who had never been to Walt Disney World before we got married.

Side note #2 - Carrie and I will be at BlogHer '11 in San Diego next week. Will any of you be there? If so, drop me a message so we can meet up and say hello!

On Videography Inside the Disney Parks

After I posted Michelle + Russell's wedding video, many of you had questions about whether or not videographers are allowed in the parks at Walt Disney World, since the rules are unclear. Professional photographers aren't allowed to do photo sessions inside of the parks at Walt Disney World. However, I haven't heard an official ruling on videography.

I want to clarify that Disney does offer a video service, but it's similar to the bridal sessions that you can do in the parks. The video sessions take place outside of park hours and you're usually filmed in your wedding attire, just like you would be in your bridal session. So, it's a fun keepsake, but it's not quite as casual as footage of you hanging out in the park amongst the other park goers. Again, I'm not sure if you could hire Disney to film you inside the park during park hours or not. If you can, it's a safe bet that outside professional videography isn't allowed.

Well, I emailed Disney, but I haven't heard a response yet. Radio silence has become a pretty normal thing when it comes to my emails to Disney, but in all fairness it's not like I'm emailing one person who knows all of the answers to my Disney questions. I'm sure my questions are usually bounced around, looking for the person who can answer them, until they end up in someone's junk mail. Plus, it might be email karma, judging from the massive amount of nice emails that you send me which I consistently forget to respond to.

Anyway, without any official guidance, I can't give you an official answer. I can, however, tell you that you are allowed to make your own unprofessional video inside of the Walt Disney World parks (of course) and that might be an option for those of you who are nervous about hiring a professional videographer.

True, a homemade video might be a more unpolished option than something professional, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to make your own edited home videos these days. We have a Canon HD videocamera that we received as an early wedding present and we took it to Walt Disney World when we went on our honeymoon. Using that footage, I've thrown together this mock save-the-date video using only the iMovie software that comes with any new Mac computer. (This version came with the laptop I bought in 2009.)

Guest Post: Choosing a Wedding Venue

This post came to us from J. Darling, a soon to be Disney bride...

It all started with a conversation…

To give you just the tiniest bit of back story here, Sean and I have been trying to plan our wedding since January. Our first, most budget friendly option, was Shades of Green in Disneyworld. We found out that through them, we could have a ceremony and reception for less than $4k. I have no doubt that it would have been lovely – and being located on Disneyworld property would have given us ample opportunity to throw in some Disney Magic.

So there was really no question “if” we’d have a Disney wedding. We looked at other venues, but this one just sat right with both of us.

Well, as many military couples know, planning around the military’s schedule is a nightmare. Finally, we were told not to make any plans in the fall. Since our initial date was in the first week of November, this was tragic. In fact, we were told not to make any plans until after 2012. Moving it up was not an option due to both budget and scheduling.

Michelle offered to share her budget with you, so you can see the difference between a DFTW wedding and a wedding at the Swan and Dolphin (which is not an "official" Disney location). Here's a breakdown of what they spent on their beautiful day:

This isn't the first time I've heard that my blog has actually talked someone out of having their Disney wedding, but it's probably the first time I've been thrilled about it:

We'd like to submit the photos from our June ceremony, and say THANKS :D. The idea, inspiration and information for it came from your blog.... So thank you :)  3 months before the wedding, the vacation was all paid for but the whole of a DFTW Escape package was still to pay for. Your post about Characters in Flight had stuck in Beth's mind, so we decided to cancel our DFTW and jumped straight into this, much more affordable, option, and we are so glad we did :) Who knew one blog post would change our lives?
