I'm the big Disney nut and my fiance Brandon likes it enough that we've been on 5 trips there in 4 years of dating, but he wouldn't be into it without me. We went on the Disney Dream cruise in February as part of the WDW Radio Cruise along with my best friend and her family. Little did I know that they had planned my proposal along with Lou Mongello and Beci Mahnken (owner of MEI/Mouse Fan Travel) for months before the trip.
The morning of our first full day on board the WDW Radio group had a welcome meeting in the Walt Disney Theater. I should have clued in when Brandon tried to insist we dress up for the meeting, which I thought was silly since we were going to the beach that day. I now regret that I was dressed in my beach bum clothing, but I had no clue as to what was coming! During the meeting Lou accounced they were going to be doing a Disney trivia contest to win some sketches done by Disney animators and the contestants would be randomly selected from a list of our group. Well, to my delight I was "randomly selected" third!
I never win anything and I'm also a huge trivia fan in general (Brandon and I are on a trivia team back home even) so I was super excited. I got up on stage and was given my question: "Name all of Walt Disney's Nine old men." I thought maybe Lou was joking, but he insisted this was my question... yikes! Finally he agreed that I could bring someone up to help me, so I excitedly tried to bring up my best friend, who is an even bigger Disney fan than me! Lou and Beci both said NO! and asked me who else I was with on my trip, and when I mentioned Brandon Beci said that he should come up "because boys are more fun to make fun of". I wasn't too happy about this and kind of groaned and said "ohhhh Brandon doesn't know anything!" right into the microphone.
Brandon gets up there are I'm thinking, "Great, if I don't know, he won't know... this is just embarrassing." Lou hands the mike to Brandon and Brandon says that I'm right and he can't help me out with the question, but he thinks he has a better one for me, and then all of a sudden he's on one knee and is holding a ring out, and everyone is clapping! I was so surprised!
I later found out that my friend and her entire family, Lou, Beci and my travel agent, Leslie, had all been in on it before the trip even started! My friend gave me a "Just Engaged" button she had ready for us, and at dinner that night our server gave us the "Just Married" and "Happy Anniversary" buttons to ensure we come back for our honeymoon and first year anniversary too (we re-booked the cruise for our honeymoon while still on the trip!). Brandon is not the kind of guy who plans surprises typically so I was just so floored that he planned something so big and made an entire trivia contest happen just for me! I'm just so lucky :)
